Day 3: Bagan – Salay – Mt. Popa – Bagan
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive southward, parallel to the Irrawaddy River, en route to Salay. After one hour we make a stop in Chauk which has a colorful morning market to explore. Few tourists visit this market and it is a great place for local interaction and photos.
Continue half an hour drive to Sale (Sa-lay), a sleepy town where various colonial buildings, monasteries and pagodas can be seen.
Amongst, we will visit Yoke-Sone-Kyaung Monastery which is a cultural heritage site in Salay, situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. It is famous for its beautiful artistic woodcarvings.
We then head east toward Mount Popa, an extinct volcano standing 1518 metres high. Arriving at midday, we’ll first go to Popa Mountain Resort for lunch with fabulous views over the surrounding area.

In the afternoon, have a boat trip along Irrawaddy River back to Bagan. Depending on the time of year the locals may be planting, harvesting or processing the crops and there are plenty of chances to stop and interact with the local farmers.
On the way back, stop to visit the Kyauk Gu U Min Temple.
The Temple was built into the river bank of sand stone. In the lower section were skillfully laid stone bricks and the two stories above were built of earth bricks. A maze of about 500 feet long was dug into the sand stone wall, with many twists and turns, tunnels and cellars for meditation.
